A gate valve, also termed a sluice valve, comprises of a gate/wedge that opens by lifting out of the fluid's way. Known for its planar sealing surfaces between the gate and seats, it offers straight-line flow with minimal restriction. The gate faces can be parallel or wedge-shaped. Primarily used to permit or halt liquid flow, regular gate valves shouldn't regulate flow unless designed specifically for that purpose. Their ability to cut liquids makes them popular in petroleum industries. In the case of extremely viscous fluids, knife gate valves are employed. When opening a gate valve, the flow path enlarges nonlinearly with respect to the percentage of opening, leading to a non-uniform change in flow rate and potential gate wear. Gate vibrations when partially open can also cause issues. Typically, gate valves are designed for full open or close positions, providing minimal friction loss when fully open.
