Gate Valve
grabcad
A gate valve, also termed a sluice valve, operates by lifting a round or rectangular gate/wedge out of fluid's way to open. Known for its planar sealing surfaces between the gate and seats, these valves are ideal when straight-line flow and minimal restriction is desired. Gate faces may be parallel or wedge-shaped. Primarily used to control liquid flow, standard gate valves aren't suited for regulation unless specifically designed. Due to their efficient cutting through liquids, gate valves are popular in petroleum industries. For thick fluids, knife gate valves - a specialty type - are utilized. Opening the valve increases the flow path nonlinearly, leading to inconsistent flow rate changes and gate/seat wear. Gate vibration occurs with partial openings, causing potential leakage. Typically, gate valves function fully open or closed; when fully open, they offer minimal friction loss due to unobstructed flow paths.
