Gate Latch Sliding Bolt Type
thingiverse
I made this latch because I wasn't satisfied with my gate's existing latch. To fix it, I created a new one from scratch. The threads on the original latch didn't fit properly, so I decided to use a tap and die to modify them halfway through. This ensures they tighten securely before going all the way through. Once installed, I drilled a hole downwards from the top while the bolt was fully engaged, then used a nail to secure the gate's top edges together. This design prevents strong winds from opening the latch or flexing it open (check out the photo showing the tethered nail). I also applied automotive double stick tape to the mounting surfaces for added stability and to keep everything in place while securing with screws. The tape provides a small margin of flexibility for bolt movements, too. UPDATE: After using this design for over a year through harsh weather conditions, I no longer rely on the nail lock (it was unnecessary) and haven't experienced any issues with the bolt sliding back. If you need to build another one of these latches, consider skipping that step – it's not necessary.
