A jerrycan, alternatively spelled as jerrican or jery can, is a durable fuel container manufactured from pressed steel. It was invented in Germany during the 1930s for military purposes to hold approximately 20 liters (4.4 imperial gallons, 5.3 U.S. gallons) of fuel. The innovation of the jerrycan surpassed earlier models that demanded tools and funnels for usage. Today, similar designs are employed for both fuel and water containers, some produced in plastic. These replicas often retain the original steel appearance and are still referred to as jerrycans. According to Wikipedia, a modern version of this canister has a 5-liter capacity.
