Garrywilliam sprawls on the northwest tip of the Maharees Peninsula, gazing westward across the bay at Brandon. It earns its name from a former castle site in the vicinity, SMR KEO27-001. The current landowner claims that during his lifetime, tractor and plough clearance unearthed this stone, buried between one and two feet deep. Prior to that, horses and ploughs had tilled the soil. The markings were duly noted and scrutinized but no definitive conclusion was reached. The stone was subsequently relocated to the edge of a low cliff in an area known as Faill Dearg, or "Red Cliff". Nevertheless, the relentless sea erosion visible throughout the region sent the stone tumbling down to its current position directly below the low cliff. A 3D image suggests that the markings might be plough marks, given their continuity across the stone.
