So I had one of these Garmin dash sandbag mounts for a 12 year old GPS that I never use and decided to convert it to a GoPro mount. The Garmin units have a non-slip rubber on the back and four pouches with weighted material that makes the mount excellent for non-permanent installs. In California, where I am located, it's against the law to mount anything directly to the windshield like suction cup mounts. Instructions I used U.S.-standard screws because they're what I have available. Remove the old mount from its bag by removing the four screws at the bottom. Drill these so a 4-40 bolt can fit through them. Print the new mount solid with one perimeter and 100% infill, making sure the main block in the middle is hollow and only needs minimal material, but is essential for strength. Use four 4-40 screws to secure the printed part down. The 4-40 screws I had were very long, so after assembly, I cut them off with a Dremel to ensure they fit properly. Next, apply an epoxy-based adhesive to a M5 acorn nut and press it into the GoPro mount socket, using J-B Kwik as my preferred option. Be sure not to get any epoxy in the threads or opening of the nut. Once the epoxy has set up, you're ready to use your new conversion.
