Although gargoyles were monstrous creatures during the Middle Ages and in Gothic architecture, they evolved into more human-like figures during the Renaissance. As a result of this transformation, they shed their superstitious connotations: originally, in the Middle Ages, their frightening appearance was intended to ward off evil spirits. The Renaissance, however, took a step back from such beliefs.
