A gargoyle is a bizarrely carved human or animal visage projecting from the gutter of a building, serving as a spout to direct water away from a wall with ease. The distorted forms adorning Gothic buildings, when not utilized as drain-spouts, should not be referred to as gargoyles, but rather simply as grotesques, or chimeras.
