Gardom's Edge Cup Ring Marks
sketchfab
Located in the rolling hills of the Peak District above the charming Derbyshire town of Baslow, this unique example of cup and ring marks resides within a richly populated prehistoric landscape. While the exact function of these enigmatic carvings remains a mystery, scholars widely debate their purpose. Perhaps they served as markers for territorial boundaries, ancient pathways, sources of vital resources, or sacred gathering spots, while others believe they pinpointed sites of spiritual significance. The consistent presence of cup and ring marks in Bronze Age landscapes strongly suggests a specific time period (2,500-800 BCE), with many examples found near the interface between upland and lowland regions, supporting the theory that they highlight crucial landscape features. This particular example is actually a durable fibreglass replica, while the original has been carefully buried for preservation; another replica can be viewed at the Weston Park Museum in Sheffield.
