As most dog owners know, their pets can be unpredictable at times, which is exactly what happened when my dogs got a hold of my water gun for the garden. They managed to chew it up pretty badly, leaving very little behind as you can see from the initial images. Thanks to this competition and the trials I completed using AutoDesk Remake and Fusion 360, I was able to recreate and improve the handle on the original water gun. The original handle was a single piece of injection molded plastic that formed a curved shape, making it easy to twist in your hand when wet. Using Remake, I captured approximately 80 photos of the part, which turned out quite well as shown in the images within the photo reel. With this tool, I was able to remove the mesh around the damaged area and recreate it using the provided tools. I also used Remake to thicken certain sections of the mesh to prevent thin walls from forming during printing, which can weaken the part. Once the mesh was processed and made manifold, I imported it into Fusion 360 to start creating a new handle. I designed it to be approximately the width of my hand but made it more square-shaped so that it wouldn't twist in your grip when using the water gun. To improve gripping, I added a small pattern of ribs on the outside of the handle. Additionally, I included internal stiffeners within the handle to provide extra stiffness and avoid relying on dense infill for support. Once the model was complete, I exported the STL file and printed the new handle, which fit onto the old water gun with minimal adjustments needed. The result is a better-performing handle that doesn't require replacing the entire part.
