We have an old statue in our backyard that has been passed down through generations of my wife's family. Standing about two feet high, it features a spout protruding from a goose's beak, allowing water to be piped directly into a fountain. Despite being repainted numerous times, the paint is now thick and peeling, yet the statue exudes an undeniable charm. I decided to give scanning a try, hoping to print out a three-dimensional replica of it using 3D technology. I employed 123D Catch and Meshmixer for this endeavor. To begin, I took thirty-eight photographs of the statue from every angle, ensuring there was significant overlap between each shot. Next, I utilized 123D Catch to merge these images into a cohesive mesh. This mesh was then imported into Meshmixer, where I refined it slightly before outputting two STL files: one featuring the statue alone and another with built-in supports. Unfortunately, my initial attempts at reducing the file size resulted in a significant loss of detail. Despite this setback, I consider the outcome to be a commendable first effort. For comparison purposes, a video showcasing the 123D Catch rendering is available for viewing here: https://youtu.be/lATga58Yqdc. For the small 60 mm white model, I used MadeSolid PET+ at 250C and a print speed of 30mm. However, due to its compact size, the level of detail achieved was somewhat limited. In contrast, the larger 150 mm print involved scaling up the design by three times and utilizing Arctic Silver PLA from Cubicity at 190C.
