Garage Door Cable Thimble
thingiverse
One side of the garage door cable has this thimble installed on the lower bracket, as shown in the picture with a ruler. It appears the thimble was installed during the crimping process and must be broken to remove it from the cable. I am uncertain whether this is done by the Overhead Door company or their cable suppliers, but I have been unable to find a replacement. When the torsion spring broke, the cable was released from the garage door bottom bracket on the side without the thimble. The cable without the thimble was curled up. In contrast, the cable with the thimble stayed in place and remained straight after disassembly. I became aware of the missing thimble only after the broken torsion spring, and it is unclear whether the thimble was designed to fit on only one side or was installed incorrectly. Originally, I believed the thimble was intended to prevent premature wear on the lower brackets and cables. However, upon further consideration, perhaps its purpose is to facilitate faster door jamming when the torsion spring breaks, thereby leaving a cable in place. If you have knowledge on this matter, please share your thoughts.
