Region Drâa-Tafilalet, Zagora Province, Ktaoua Rural Commune. Gara Mâsmoûda is situated about ten kilometers south-east of the bend in Oued Drâa and east of Jebel Megag massif. It's a towering witness hill with abrupt limits, designated under the term berber gara, a recurring geological formation within the Sahara desert environment. Gara Mâsmoûda is just one example among others in the Maghreb of this type of geological formation whose summit has been anthropized in historical times. These places were both remarkable observation posts for the surrounding territory over several dozen kilometers and easily defendable spaces for protection and refuge in crisis times. Based on initial general observations of the built environment without archaeological interventions, we cautiously consider a construction from the 16th to the 17th centuries, while not ruling out a medieval origin.
