Roman copies followed closely behind Greek originals from the Praxiteles school. Ganymede, a legendary hero of divine status, hailed from Troy in Greek mythology. Born to Tros of Dardania and Callirrhoe, daughter of the river god Scamander, his brothers were Ilus and Assaracus. In one narrative thread, Zeus snatches him away, disguised as an eagle, to serve as a cup-bearer on Mount Olympus.
