Ganymede

myminifactory

This masterpiece is an exact replica of an ancient torso, likely depicting Bacchus, which Prince Stefano Colonna of Palestrina gifted to Duke Cosimo I de' Medici back in 1548. With skilled guidance from Flemish artist Willem van Tetrode, Benvenuto Cellini filled in the missing pieces (arms, head, feet with base, and eagle) and cleverly reinterpreted the classic myth: Bacchus playfully outsmarts Zeus' eagle by stealing one of its eaglets. The result is a remarkably modern work, thanks to Cellini's innovative blend of old and new techniques that perfectly matched his restoration methods of the time.
