Gajarh Murti (11 statues) This massive black sculpture stands out in sheer poetry of stone. The sculpture, crafted by Devi Prasad Roy Choudhary, depicts the famous Dandi March led by Mahatma Gandhi in 1931 against oppressive salt taxes imposed by the British regime. Situated outside President House, this powerful sculpture can be seen by visitors entering New Delhi as they commemorate the millions of Indians who participated in the freedom struggle. DANDI MARCH On March 12, 1930, Gandhiji embarked on the historic Dandi March which lasted twenty-four days. The first batch of satyagrahis led by Gandhiji consisted of individuals between sixteen and sixty-one years old, totaling seventy-nine members from different provinces who were active at Sabarmati Ashram. As they made their way to Dandi, a huge crowd followed them everywhere. Gandhiji stopped at various places along the way, addressing hundreds of thousands of people gathered to explain the objectives and mode of Civil Disobedience. Enormous numbers surged forward to join the satyagrahis in their protest at different locations. Gandhiji and his followers eventually reached Dandi after completing a 241-mile long march. Once they picked up a lump of natural salt from the sea-shore, Gandhiji declared that now it was open to anyone willing to take the risk of prosecution under the salt law to manufacture salt wherever convenient. He urged villagers to be fully informed about the incidence of the salt tax and the manner of breaking laws related to it so as to achieve repeal. The defiance of Salt Laws became an emblematic symbol of the power of Satyagraha. The entire nation responded resolutely to the Mahatma's call for freedom. Millions of people joined the defiant movement against the Salt Tax, while leaders including Mahatma Gandhi were arrested in acts of courage and defiance. Women, students, and activists took part in the fight for independence, accompanied by the violent reactions from the British government. March 12, 1930 marks the day when Gandhiji embarked on a perilous journey to Dandi to produce salt is commemorated as Dandi March Day in independent India.
