Mahatma Gandhi, born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar, India, is renowned for his tireless efforts to liberate India from British rule. Gandhi emerged as a stalwart leader of the nationalist movement against British dominance in India. His impassioned stance led Indians to join him in challenging the oppressive salt tax with the historic 400 km Dandi Salt March in 1930. Later, Gandhi galvanized the masses by calling for Britain's withdrawal from India in 1942, earning him numerous years of imprisonment in both South Africa and India. He chose a simple life within a self-sufficient community, wearing traditional Indian attire woven with yarn hand-spun on a charkha. Gandhi lived modestly, consuming simple vegetarian food, and frequently undertook long fasts for personal purification and political protest. His unwavering commitment to nonviolence inspired millions of Indians to fight for their rights. Despite Gandhi's vision of an independent India built on religious tolerance, a new Muslim nationalism began to assert its demands for a separate homeland carved out of India in the early 1940s. Britain ultimately granted independence in August 1947, but at the cost of partitioning the Indian Empire into two dominions: a Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan. The sudden independence triggered widespread violence, particularly in Punjab and Bengal, as millions of Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs rushed to establish their new homes. In the aftermath, Gandhi traversed the affected areas, offering comfort to those who needed it most. Undeterred by the dire circumstances, Gandhi continued his tireless efforts, initiating multiple fasts unto death to put an end to the religious violence. His final such attempt in January 1948 aimed to not only stop the bloodshed but also press India into releasing cash assets owed to Pakistan. However, some Indians questioned Gandhi's accommodationist stance, including a fervent Hindu nationalist named Nathuram Godse. It was he who ultimately led to Gandhi's demise on January 30, 1948 by firing three bullets into his chest. Gandhi's birthday is commemorated as Gandhi Jayanti in India and as the International Day of Nonviolence worldwide. His extraordinary leadership has solidified him in the Indian psyche as a legendary figure - 'Father of the Nation', affectionately referred to as Bapu or father by many.
