A figure of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi stands, (born October 2, 1869, Porbandar, India—died January 30, 1948, Delhi), a powerful Indian lawyer, leader of the nationalist movement against British rule in India. Gandhi led Indians in defying the British-imposed salt tax with a bold 400 km (250 mi) Dandi Salt March in 1930. He called for British to quit India in 1942. Gandhi faced imprisonment many times in South Africa and India, but remained a steadfast figure in his residential community. He wore traditional Indian clothing woven on a charkha, living simply with simple vegetarian food. He often undertook long fasts for self-purification and protest. Gandhi's vision of an independent India based on pluralism was threatened by rising Muslim nationalism demanding a separate homeland. In 1947, Britain granted independence but the Indian Empire was divided into two dominions: majority Hindu India and majority Muslim Pakistan. Tensions led to widespread violence in Punjab and Bengal. Gandhi traveled to affected areas to bring solace. He then took several fasts unto death to stop violence, including one on January 12, 1948 that aimed to get Pakistan paid. Some saw Gandhi as too lenient. Among them was Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist who fired three bullets into his chest, killing Gandhi on January 30, 1948. Gandhi's birthdate, October 2, is celebrated in India and worldwide. It is marked as a national holiday called Gandhi Jayanti, the International Day of Nonviolence. He is considered by many the Father of the Nation in India and affectionately known as Bapu, father. Captured with advanced cameras and 3D scanning technology.
