Located near Old Goa, India, a Statue Of Mahatma Gandhi And Local Village Girl rises above the rest at Gandhi circle next to Basilica of Bom Jesus in an area steeped in heritage structures. A sculpture honoring Mahatma Gandhi, born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, India, and deceased January 30, 1948, in Delhi, is a remarkable tribute to the man who spearheaded India's fight against British rule as an Indian lawyer, politician, social activist, and writer. Gandhi led Indians in defying the British-imposed salt tax with the Dandi Salt March, a 400 km journey through the terrain, in 1930. Later, he rallied Indians to demand the British leave India in 1942. Imprisoned multiple times, first in South Africa and later in India, Gandhi resided modestly within a self-sufficient community where residents spun yarn for hand-woven cloth on charkha wheels. He consumed simple vegetarian dishes and went without food during extended fasts, often using this tactic to protest injustices. Gandhi's vision of an independent India encompassing various faiths was threatened by the rising Muslim nationalism that called for a separate homeland in India in the early 1940s. When British Indian Empire gained freedom on August 14, 1947, the dominions were split into Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan, resulting in widespread displacement of Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs. In the aftermath of independence celebrations held elsewhere, Gandhi chose to visit areas ravaged by violence. He took to fasting multiple times in the following months in an effort to stop religious fighting. In January 1948 at the age of 78, his final fast was also aimed at pressuring India into paying long-overdue financial obligations owed to Pakistan. Some Indians questioned whether Gandhi had gone too far with his conciliatory efforts. Among these dissenters was Nathuram Godse, a fervent Hindu nationalist who fired three bullets straight into Gandhi's chest on January 30, 1948, claiming his life. India commemorates Gandhi's birthday, October 2, as Gandhi Jayanti, and observes it nationwide. It is celebrated worldwide as International Day of Nonviolence. Commonly regarded as the Father of the Nation in India, people affectionately call Gandhi Bapu. This detailed replica was captured through 1700 DSLR photographs which were then analyzed using Reality Capture and sculpted with Zbrush technology to ensure utmost precision.
