Gandhara Buddha at The Asian Art Museum, San Francisco
myminifactory
This ancient black marble sculpture has been dated back to 100-200 AD. It showcases a serene Buddha figure with his right arm lifted high in the air. This iconic depiction of a Buddha with the raised right hand, facing outward, holds two significant meanings. Firstly, it symbolizes the Protection Buddha, as the uplifted right hand acts as a shield, offering safety and security. Secondly, Overcoming Fear is closely related to this first meaning, as receiving protection would naturally reduce one's level of fear. The main characteristics of this pose include the raised right hand, while the Buddha can be depicted either sitting or standing. Additionally, the left hand may be extended outward or placed palm up in the lap. This magnificent statue embodies courage and provides a sense of protection from fear, delusion, and anger.
