The Game Boy is an 8-bit handheld game console developed by Nintendo that made its debut in Japan on April 21, 1989, marking the 100th anniversary of Nintendo. In North America, it was released on July 31, 1989, and in Europe on September 28, 1990. As the first handheld console in the Game Boy series, it was created by Satoru Okada and Nintendo Research & Development 1. This same team, led by Gunpei Yokoi at the time, is credited with designing the Game & Watch series and several popular games for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Redesigned versions of the Game Boy were released in 1996 as the Game Boy Pocket and in 1998 as the Game Boy Light, which was only available in Japan.
