Here's my version of communication device from Galaxy Quest. You have two versions available, one a smaller replica of the original prop and another with a 2.5" mini plasma disk that reacts to sound, making it activate when you talk. The second version has a slot for a small micro switch in the case, so when the top lid is closed, power will be switched off. As soon as you open the lid, the plasma disk will light up. Here's a short video: https://www.facebook.com/marcin.poblocki/videos/10212388366799694/ The plasma disks are available on eBay from China (I ordered blue, but they sent me green by mistake). You can find them here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Plasma-Disk-Lighting-Plate-Glass-Plastic-LED-Mini-Sensor-Party-Club-Disco-Decor/223126996554?_trkparms=aid%3D555018%26algo%3DPL.SIM%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D20160908110712%26meid%3De69d18fc11444a529ad563320a57640e%26pid%3D100677%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D30%26sd%3D302866727736%26itm%3D223126996554&_trksid=p2385738.c100677.m4598 All you have to do is remove the original prop from its case (be careful not to damage anything) and put it inside the second version. You'll need two single AAA battery holders to power it up (see one of the pictures). The only downside of this project is that it had to be slightly larger than the original prop, but I couldn't find smaller plasma disks. This is still a work in progress as I'm working on a locking mechanism to keep the lid closed and a spring mechanism so the lid would open automatically.
