Gaggia Portafilter Handle
cults3d
A replacement handle for a Gaggia Portafilter. Currently, a work in progress - I'm testing its durability myself and wanted to share this version. I printed mine as a draft at 0.4 layer height with 20% infill, but also 5 perimeters to ensure the business end was almost solid while the handle end wasn't wasting plastic. It feels very solid in use, although a bit lighter than the original. I used a raft - however, your judgment is advised as my raft left the ends blemished (see improvements below). Printing in ABS is recommended. As I've only had my printer for a week, I don't have any ABS yet and printed in black PLA. It works fine, but I think this won't last long due to generated heat. The current design fits very snugly - expect pressure when fitting. You won't need glue for the end cap, but you might need light sanding. A future version will probably be a bit less snug. When printing, print the handle with the flared end on the bed. Supports are necessary for the inner cavity. For the end cap, print either way up; however, I recommend printing with the small end on the bed and using supports to give it an unblemished finish. Improvements can be expected as follows: 1. Slightly less tight fit 2. More of an edge on the flare of the handle for cleaner removal of a raft To disassemble your portafilter, you will need a 10mm socket set with an extender. There's an end cap on the original handle covering a screw approximately 8cm deep. Update: I've used this handle for two weeks now and it worked out great. PLA handles heat fine; however, I still think ABS would be better for long-term use. Two improvements have been made: 1. A small mesh error was removed 2. A little length was added to the handle's flare for a better edge to be printed The fit wasn't loosened - it feels great in my hand as is, whereas the original had a slight looseness to it. If you think it may be too tight and don't want to sand a bit, increase the scaling to 101-102% for a slightly looser fit.
