I was inspired by a Kickstarter campaign for woodcut art (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gabrielschama/wood-cut-art) by artist Gabriel Schama, where he created coordinated patterns in 1/8 inch wood that were then layered to impressive effect. The process looked similar to the layers of a 3D print to me, so I decided to see if 3D printing could replicate this effect. I started with modeling the shape, but instead of intentional layers, I made gradual slopes that the slicer would create for me. Then I cut it thick (using low resolution settings) to see how the result came out. In my prints, even at high resolution, the layers aren't noticeable enough to be used for artistic purposes, which is ironic because they always were too visible to be considered smooth. It still makes a nice decoration and is something pretty to look at. More information about the making process can be found at http://joes3dworkbench.blogspot.com.
