Western Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) The Western Lowland Gorilla is a fascinating species of great ape that inhabits the western lowlands of central Africa. This remarkable animal is characterized by its robust build and agile movements, making it well adapted to its environment. In 1847, Savage and Wyman first described this species, providing valuable insights into its behavior and characteristics. The Western Lowland Gorilla is a highly social creature that lives in groups, led by dominant males who protect their territory and females with whom they form close bonds. One remarkable individual of this species is MZB 2010-1163, a female adult who has been studied extensively due to her unique characteristics. This gorilla's right forelimb is particularly noteworthy, as it features an articulated hand that allows for precise grasping and manipulation of objects. At the age of nine years and eight months, MZB 2010-1163 was observed at the Barcelona Zoo in Spain, where she continues to thrive under the care of dedicated zookeepers.
