The golden canary that serves as his familiar is in fact polymorphed golden dragon and there are old legends that name the old Archmage as a dragon or even a god in disguise, eternal wanderer and exile from the divine realms, forever roaming the mortal lands, defending the short-lived mortal races from the whims of gods and demons and righting both ancient and more recent wrongs.
