The German-built Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor, code-named Kurier by Allied forces, was an all-metal four-engine monoplane originally designed for use as a long-distance airliner. When Japan requested a maritime patrol aircraft with extended range, the Luftwaffe began producing military versions of the plane that were used for reconnaissance and anti-shipping missions in the Atlantic Ocean. The German air force also made extensive use of the Fw 200 as a transport aircraft to ferry troops and supplies across Europe.
