THIS PART HAS NOT YET BEEN TESTED, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK, FOR VETERINARY USE ONLY. Update 11/28: A second version is being developed for the modular design, which uses metal rods to connect multiple pieces together. A prototype is currently being built and tested. Once I have more positive results, I will make the modular version the primary version. Update 11/2: After initial testing of the Modular version, it was found that epoxy was insufficient to hold the components together and needs a redesign. The modular version components are being pulled down until this is addressed. For Veterinary or Emergency use only Update 6/12/2020: A modular version of the design has been introduced that fits on a smaller printer bed. Each component MUST be fully epoxied in place on all contacting surfaces, including the pegs and flush faces of the parts. This alternative design is inherently somewhat weaker and should be checked and inspected for weak joints carefully before use. This is a 3D printable version of a horse front leg splint for horses with broken leg bones. It is an emergency medical device that takes significant structural loading. THIS PART MUST ALWAYS BE PRINTED AT 100% INFILL, MAKE SURE YOUR PRINTER CAN HANDLE SUCH A LARGE PART. IT NEEDS TO BE SCALING FOR THE GENERAL TYPE OF HORSE IT IS TO BE APPLIED TO. It has holes drilled into it for stitching in the 3 inch wide straps that clamp the shoe to the leg. Please watch this video of the original Kimzey splint being applied to follow along with how to construct your strap arrangement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxAmPiBDvyY A smaller version for a foal should fit on most home printers, but this part is really more for using on larger industrial 3D printers. This is a difficult part to print because of the arrangement all the components have to take to achieve their function, so be careful to clean and remove all support material so the part is smooth and won't have any pieces that have a risk of breaking off and ending up in possible open wounds. These splints are very serious pieces of equipment that are intended to be life-saving devices. Please contact fuznuzhorseequipment@gmail.com before you attempt one of these prints for any additional guidance and support. These need to be printed and prepared well in advance of an emergency and stored and maintained properly.
