FuzNuz Foal Hoof Extenders
thingiverse
Update 4/28/20: Added lateral extenders as well as the heel extender. This design is intended for veterinary use only and should be used strictly under the guidance of a veterinarian. A modification of the full-size glue-on hoof boot, this design features a slightly rounder attachment point and a long plate as a heel extender to treat foals with flexor tendon laxity. Glue on with a permanent but easily removable glue rated for equine use. An example can be found at https://www.hoof-it.com/collections/glue-on-horseshoes/products/hoof-glue, although several options are available. In emergency situations, any two-part epoxy will suffice, but removal of the shoe afterwards may require extensive filing to remove excess glue and plastic. Use just enough glue to secure the shoe without risking damage to the hoof wall if the foal steps on the extender. In extreme emergencies, duct tape can be used to secure the extension, rendering a 3D print unnecessary as a piece of wood would be quicker to construct. The part is designed to fit a hoof approximately 2.5-2.75 inches in width with a front slope of 50 degrees. For emergency requests for custom shoes, please leave your request in the comments and FuzNuz will make every reasonable attempt to provide a design within 24 hours. Non-emergency requests should be sent via email to FuzNuzHorseEquipment@gmail.com or through the Thingiverse messenger. Special thanks go to James A. Orsini and Thomas J. Divers for their imagery and information in Equine Emergencies Treatment and Procedures: 4th Edition, Elsevier Saunders, 2014, pp. 307, which inspired this design.
