Future Trunks Trunks first appears in chapter #331 The Young Boy of Mystery published on July 15, 1991. At this time he is a mysterious seventeen year old who can transform into the Super Saiyan state. He singlehandedly kills Freeza and his father, King Cold. When Goku returns from Planet Namek, Trunks confides in him about his tragic story. Trunks has traveled twenty years from the future where the world is in constant ruin due to androids #17 and #18. In this time, Goku has died of a heart virus and everyone except Gohan has fallen to the artificial humans. Bulma is training Trunks secretly with Gohan. After Gohan's death, Trunks takes on the role of Earth's protector for three years until he informs Goku about future events and returns home. In the present day, Trunks joins battle against the artificial humans. He trains with Vegeta in the Room of Spirit and Time after Cell appears. When Vegeta loses to Cell, Trunks battles him but ultimately gives up due to his new Super Saiyan form not being effective. Trunks then participates in Cell's tournament where he is killed by Cell. Following Cell's defeat, Trunks returns home restored with the Dragon Balls. Years later, Trunks encounters a new enemy, Goku Black. Forced to retreat, Trunks trains with Vegeta and vows to surpass both his father and Goku Black in strength. After traveling back in time and meeting up with Gohan again, he decides to confront Goku Black once more so that his timeline can have the chance at happiness.
