The 1894 Motor-Carriage Design is widely recognized as the world's first sports car ever designed. In 1886, Karl Benz developed what many consider to be the first automobile and its four-wheeled counterpart - essentially an advanced early model. Three years later, his innovative motor vehicle evolved into a unique high-performance vehicle capable of handling fast road circuits - that became known as the "motor carriage." By this time in automotive history, speed has already become crucial in any racing environment where powerful, sleek machines rule over standard vehicles in competition races and daily street racing on closed circuit. Karl Benz and other automotive designers, at that point in the history timeline, focused entirely on constructing strong and capable vehicles able to traverse a given road system quickly. The creation of the "motor carriage" not only allowed Karl Benz's designs but also enabled others in the emerging automotive industry - paving their path to designing their own performance vehicles - further boosting speed records through engineering innovations on wheels that paved roads to speed competitions all around Europe and the United States
