I designed knobs for things I designed. The knobs thread onto rods, requiring some preparation beforehand. First, the rod needs to be roughened or ground on its sides to ensure proper threading. To do this safely, clamp it upright and protect the threads from damage. Next, heat the rod with a torch or heat gun until it's warm enough to handle. At this point, you can screw the knob onto the rod while it's still in an upright position. Alternatively, you may be able to screw on the knob first, then place the rod in its upright position. Once the rod is heated, melt just the center of the PLA (polylactic acid) enough that it conforms to the flats or marks on the threaded rod. Then, let it cool completely in an upright position until the rod reaches room temperature. With this process complete, you'll have a sturdy rod with a securely attached knob at its end.
