Funerary stele with scenes of the miracles of Christ

This ancient tombstone showcases miracles of Christ dating back to 290-310 A.D. and originates from the Kircher Museum. Constructed in the late seventeenth century by Alfonso Donnino, a Roman Senate secretary, he bequeathed his collection of antiquities to the Roman College, which suffered through various hardships over the years. Amplified by Athanasius Kircher, who linked his name to the museum, it was later enhanced by Buonanni and Contucci. In 1773, following the Jesuit Order's suppression in Rome by Pope Clemente XIV, the museum declined, with precious antiques and numismatic collections transferred to the Vatican Museums. A subsequent resurgence occurred under Pius VI (1775-1799), who restored the Jesuit Order in 1825. Leo XII then handed over the Roman College, allowing the Museum Kircherian to flourish further. Under Giuseppe Marchi's direction, educated and knowledgeable father, the series was enriched until 1860. His successor, Francesco Tongiorgi, also contributed significantly. Significant numismatic materials from the Medagliere Kircherian merged into the National Roman Museum. Notably, the collection of castbronzes from ancient Italy, including 'aes grave' and coins from the votive deposit of Vicarello on Lake Bracciano (Rome), were transferred.
