This ancient stele showcases two majestic lions seated opposite each other in a deliberate display of contrast. Like many early archaic funeral monuments found on Cyprus, this one features regal lions or sphinxes atop its surface. In funerary stelae, these powerful symbols - both mythical creatures and fierce predators - served as apotropaic talismans, warding off evil spirits to ensure a safe passage into the afterlife. The symbolism has its roots in ancient Near Eastern iconography.
