Funerary stele with a symposium scene
myminifactory
The scene of a symposium on this ancient stele is carved in relief, showing a bearded man reclining back and grasping a crutch as he sits, possibly representing the deceased person himself. A woman who could very well be his wife is seated comfortably on his lap. The stele proudly bears a lion in relief at its top - a widely recognized apotropaic symbol found on many funerary monuments of this period. In Cyprus, symposium scenes were linked to funeral rituals much earlier than they were elsewhere in the Hellenic world.
