The monument was erected for Valerius Valens, a soldier from the Roman legion XI Claudia, who proudly claimed his Roman citizenship as indicated by the unmistakable emblem of Rome displayed prominently below the epitaph. Beneath the inscription is depicted in relief the Capitoline Wolf, tenderly nursing its twin offspring Romulus and Remus. The monument was unearthed in 1964 adjacent to the fortifications of the Ibida fortress (Slava Rusă, Tulcea county). Dating back to the late 3rd century or early 4th century A.D., it stands as a testament to the region's rich history. MATERIAL AND SIZE: Crafted from limestone, its dimensions measure h 1.24 m, width 0.73 m, and thickness 0.24 m. LOCATION: The Museum of National History and Archaeology in Constanta, Romania proudly showcases this ancient relic.
