Funerary Stele of the Girl Silenis
myminifactory
Attica (Greece), acquired in 1898. Marble, circa 350 BC. A young woman named Silenis stands before us here, clad in the traditional attire of parthenoi, Athenian maidens who remained unmarried. Her long locks cascade down her neck, while a cloak envelops her back, both distinctive features that set her apart. A small loutrophoros, a ceremonial bath vessel used on the eve of marriage, sits atop the pediment, serving as a poignant reminder of the wedding she never had.
