Funerary stele of Aphtonetos Circa 145-165 marks beginning of Hadrian's reign Laurion Greece Marble Musée d'Art et d'Histoire (Musée du Cinquantenaire, Brussels, Belgium). CapturingReality created 500 images. This stele features an aedicule whose architrave is decorated with hememions and rests on pilasters. The inscription identifies the deceased as "Aphtonetos son of Herakieon the Milesian". The ox dealer appears face forward dressed in a chiton with sleeves and belt draped in a himation. His shepherd's staff resembles a club so much that the scene recalls Herakles bringing back Geryon's herds. The minor artistic value of this work is compensated by the exceptional fact that Greek prototypes rarely depict the deceased engaging in their profession.
