Funerary stele of a Greek hoplite
myminifactory
This magnificent funerary monument, a partly preserved stele, showcases a formidable warrior in full regalia - a hoplite, embodying the ideals of ancient Greek culture. As we gaze upon this exquisite work of art, we are treated to a rare sight: a warrior armed to the teeth with his trusty helmet, spear, shield and sword at the ready. The inscription etched onto the stele proudly proclaims the name and hometown of our brave hoplite, Kardia in Thrace, leaving us to ponder if this could be the final resting place of a Greek soldier who fought valiantly on Cyprus during the Persian wars. Dating back to the 3rd century, the inscription itself is later than the relief that adorns it, while proudly declaring: Dionysio (s) Kardiano (s).
