The Altemps Collection was initiated by Cardinal Markus Sitticus Altemps and carried forward by his nephew Giovanni Angelo Altemps. It featured priceless ancient sculptures, an extensive collection of paintings, and an impressive library known as the Altempsian Library. Starting in 1621, the collection began to be dismantled. Over time, the valuable sculptures were absorbed into other private collections before eventually making their way into prominent museums worldwide, including the Vatican Museums, the British Museum, the Louvre, and the Puškin Museum. Today, only a few artworks from the original core remain in existence. These include four large statues situated within the courtyard – a Youthful Hercules, an Athlete at Rest, a Maenad, and a Demeter – as well as some sculptures displayed along the grand staircase.
