The woman depicted in the sculpture is Elena Mastiani Brunacci, wife of Giovan Francesco Mastiani, who passed away. Elena commissioned Lorenzo Bartolini to create the work in 1840 as a tribute to her husband. Giovan Francesco Mastiani was an extremely wealthy and influential individual among Tuscan families. He held the position of Subprefect of the Pisan environs during the Napoleonic period. Later, for his support during the French occupation, Napoleon awarded him the title of Count of the Empire, a highly esteemed honor. In 1812, he was named Knight of the imperial order de la Réunion and held the same rank as a French citizen. Giovan Francesco Mastiani Brunacci accompanied Grand Duchess Élisa Baciocchi to Paris in 1809 for Napoleon's marriage to Marie Louise of Austria.
