Funerary Cone

Funerary cones were small cones crafted from clay, used extensively in Ancient Egypt's Theban necropolis. These items were placed over the entrance of a tomb's chapel. Early examples date back to the Eleventh Dynasty, although they are mostly plain and undecorated. As time passed during the New Kingdom, the cones decreased in size and became inscribed with hieroglyphs displaying the title and name of the tomb owner, frequently accompanied by a brief prayer. Despite extensive research, the exact purpose of these cones remains unclear, but several theories propose they served as identification documents, architectural components, or symbolic offerings.
