Funeral bust of the Roman citizen C. Aurunceius Princeps, Circa 40-50 CE, Rome (tomb near Porta Tiburtina, 1880), Marble. Musée du Cinquantenaire (Brussels, Belgium). Made with CapturingReality. This portrait of a former slave who rose to become a respected Roman citizen mirrors the truthful style typical of noble portraits. The work adorned his tomb (columbarium). A columbarium is a building that stores urns of members from the same family or professional association in niches within its walls, much like a dovecote, hence the name. Inscription: C(Aio) Aurunceio C(ai) and M(arcus) l(iberi) Principi / conliberti and conlibertae honoris causa merenti (For Caius Aurunceius Princeps, freed from Caius and Marcus, his freedman and freedwoman raised this portrait in tribute because he deserved it).
