Have you ever needed to add a rotational sensor to a robot, but found the cost prohibitive? I created a printable optical potentiometer as an affordable alternative. Check out my blog for more details on this project http://coolrobotprojects.blogspot.co.at/. The project utilizes open-Frameworks code to generate the gradient/encoder pattern (https://github.com/thunderbug1/encoder_pattern_generat). However, I am still working on generating radial patterns successfully. A key component missing is a paper ring with a gradient that's glued to the rotor. This project has two versions: MK1 uses the photoelectric fork sensor (http://www.pollin.de/shop/downloads/D120592D.PDF), while MK2 features an improved sensor (http://www.pollin.de/shop/downloads/D120525D.PDF, Version A).
