Design theory is taught at DHBW Mannheim. A crucial part of this lecture is mechanisms and gear trains. In order to bring students closer to complex transmissions, it is essential to consider an illustrative model. My student project during the 5th semester was focused on vehicle transmissions. The task was to develop a functional transmission model. This should be made additively and used to demonstrate it in the lectures. The implemented transmission is based on the 4HP22 from ZF. It's a torque converter transmission with four forward gears and one reverse gear. The model was chosen due to the presence of a real ZF-4HP22 transmission in the laboratory of DHBW Mannheim. The table model should operate without fluid. Therefore, it was redesigned for an operation from the outside using push rods. The hydraulic torque converter has been left out for the implementation. The gearbox consists of three planetary stages which provide the necessary gear ratios. The transmission model was designed with Catia V5. The possibility of additively manufacturing plastic parts at DHBW Mannheim resulted in a fully functional transmission model.
