The Human Development Index is a composite measure of three basic dimensions of human well-being: living standards, life expectancy at birth, and knowledge. It was first proposed by Pakistani economist Mahbub ul Haq in 1990 and was developed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to complement the GNP as a broader measure of prosperity. The HDI is based on three basic dimensions of human development: 1. A long and healthy life, measured by life expectancy at birth 2. Access to knowledge, measured by expected years of schooling and mean years of schooling 3. A decent standard of living, measured by Gross National Income per capita (GNI) The HDI is calculated using three equally weighted dimensions that are aggregated into a single composite index on a scale from 0 to 1, where 1 represents the highest level of human development. The resulting score can be used to rank countries according to their levels of human development
