The Hakka people's unique rural dwellings in southeastern Fujian, China are known as the Fujian tulou. These buildings were constructed between the 12th and 20th centuries, typically featuring thick load-bearing rammed earth walls between three to five stories high, housing up to 800 people. Smaller interior structures are often enclosed by these massive peripheral walls, which contain halls, storehouses, wells, and living areas, resembling a small fortified city. The Fujian tulou is a world-exclusive mountainous large-scale rammed earth dwelling form that originated during the Song and Yuan dynasties, matured in the Ming and Qing eras, and reached its peak in the Republican era. These structures were built using raw earth and rammed earth walls, adapting to the needs of communal living and defense against external threats.
