Fugla Ness Broch near Toft, Delting, Shetland Isles, Scotland, UK. A ruined broch stands as a mound of rubble and stretches of earthwork defensive banks. It is built in the Iron Age, most brochs were occupied 2000 years ago. The best surviving example reaches 13 meters tall, most brochs probably never achieved this height. The broch lies on gently sloping land just above the sea overlooking Yell Sound. Two guard cells flank a rubble-choked entrance passage on the eastern (seaward) side of the broch. Some outer wall faces on the eastern side have been lost to erosion by the sea, revealing the foundation of the broch. When surveyed in the early 1930s, plans indicated the broch was a complete circle, but this is no longer the case today.
