In the vicinity of San Miguel de la Escalada monastery lies Rueda del Almirante, a town that lends its name to the Esla River valley region in this setting, and was an important locality in the Middle Ages, with a castle and walled enclosure. Its location on a hill is strategically advantageous, commanding a significant territory and possibly housing pre-Roman and Roman populations at different times, much like nearby Lancia mesa, albeit in smaller numbers.
