Sensō-ji (Kinryū-zan Sensō-ji) is a historic Buddhist temple located in Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan. It's the oldest temple in Tokyo and one of the most significant. Associated with the Tendai Buddhist sect, it broke away after World War II. Next to the temple stands the Shinto shrine of Asakusa. The temple is dedicated to Bodhisattva Kannon (Avalokitesvara). According to legend, the Kannon statue was discovered in Sumida River by two fishermen, brothers Hinokuma Hamanari and Hinokuma Takenari, in 628. Village chief Hajino Nakamoto recognized the sanctity of the statue and worshiped it by transforming his own home into a small temple for Asakusa residents to pay homage. In 645, the first temple was built for its veneration, making this one the oldest in Tokyo. During World War II, the temple was bombed and destroyed, and its reconstruction symbolized Japanese people's peace and rebirth.
